Workshop

Oneiric Maps

Time: 15pm CEST
The workshop lasts 90 minutes
Requirements:
  • arrive with one dream already digitized in some word processor format such as .doc/ .txt/ .rtf  etc .
  • install twine before the workshop starts. Although you can also work with the online version. Both available at https://twinery.org/

Oneiric Maps is a workshop by Vinicius Marquet that explores dreams as digital narratives by using UX  prototype techniques and tools. The project fosters the remediation of written language within the networked and programmable environments, by remembering, deconstructing and rearranging dreams experiences. The project has three main objectives: to explore the onirics experiences;  to tie the relation between dreams and the vigil state and to mirror dreams of community where it is ‘played’.

We will explore our dreams using Twine, an open-source tool for telling interactive, nonlinear stories. The workshop will give an introduction to Twine syntax and framework. It doesn't require previous knowledge or experience. Experts users are welcome to join.

Time: 17pm CEST

Roundtable with Omsk Social Club, Nina Runa Essendrop, Nick Koppenhagen,Vinicius Marquet, Steven Malliet, Orion Maxted, Trakal and Carina Erdmann

As the Blend & Bleed symposium comes to an end we will come together for a collective moment of reflection around the currents and themes that have been running throughout the programm: Collective Worldbuilding, Virtual Embodiment, Transreality and Bleed. We will sketch the landscapes from which they have emerged and how they were activated within respective programs. The public is invited to share their experiences opening a dialog around strategies, difficulties and dreams for interactive narrative and community building within the digital format. What forms of relating can we imagine through play? What structures enable us?

To conspire means to breathe together -This was pointed out to me by Simon Asencio who had it from Eleanor Ivory Weber who saw it on an Andy Warhol poster... This also means to let each other breathe.

Vinicius Marquet (Mexico City, 1982) is a designer, author and researcher. Vinicius has a Master's degree in Digital culture and Game design from HKU (NLD) and The Open University (UK) with a specialty in Digital Storytelling from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Conservatory in Ghent (BE). He is currently a Doctor of Arts candidate in the Interactions Research Unit at the University of Luvenia (Be). His work explores the mutation of written language in programming and connectivity environments. In 2017 he published the hyperfiction based on the life and work of Ulises Carrión, Bucle: Archivo de ficciones (2017) at the Centro de Cultura Digital in Mexico City. His e-book Anacron: Hypothesis of an All Product (2009) is part of the third collection of electronic literature by the Electronic Literature Organization.

His work has been exhibited in Europe, the United States, Cuba and Mexico. In 2011, he started the Cuéntanos un Secreto project which distributes and preserves popular stories in secret form through a visual communication workshop. Currently, the CS project archive is made up of more than seven different languages and various visual representations. He works as an independent designer and workshop facilitator at various universities and cultural centers.

Steven Malliet (Turnhout BE, 1977) is an artist, lecturer and researcher at LUCA School of Arts, where he teaches Meaningful Play and art-based research. He is active in several research projects that involve the creation of game and interaction rules within artistic and applied contexts, in addition to investigating the relationship between music and visuals in audiovisual media production. He has designed a number of educational games, and has created music videos and experimental short films. His academic research addresses the socio-psychological determinants of digital game play, video game realism, and the methodology of game text analysis – topics on which he has published in international journals.

He is co-editor of two books: ‘Vice City Virtue: Moral Issues in Digital Game Play’ and ‘The Borders of Subculture: Resistance and the Mainstream’. As a musician he has created several albums and music videos under the name Slow Bear.

Omsk Social Club

Omsk Social Club is a “futuristically political”, [i.e. unrealistic] immersive action group. Omsk proposes contents and makings as a form of post-political entertainment in an attempt to shadow-play politics until the game ruptures the surface we now know as Life. In the field, this is called “Bleed”.

Omsk Social Club forks traditional methods of Live Action Role Play (Larp) through immersive installations and into Real Game Play (RGP) to induce states that could potentially be a fiction or a yet, unlived reality. Omsk works closely with networks of viewers, everything is unique and unrehearsed. The living installations they create examine virtual egos, popular experiences and political phenomena.

They have exhibited across Europe in various institutions, galleries, theatres and off-sites such as Martin Gropius Bau,  House of Electronic Kunst Basel, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich, HKW, Berlin, Volksbühne, Berlin and Stems Gallery, Brussels. They have been included in CTM Festival (2021) 6th Athens Biennale (2018), Transmediale Festival (2019), The Influencers (2018) and Impakt Festival (2018). In 2021 they will co-curate the 7th Athens Biennale with Larry Ossei-Mensah.

Trakal

Trakal (*1988, Dresden) is a filmmaker, writer and participatory artist based in Berlin. Through collaborative process, performative rituals, historical interrogation and psychodynamic research Trakal develops films, texts and installations that deal with the impact that neoliberal subject production, post-socialist processes and surveillance technology have on the formation of communities. Trakal’s work has been shown among others at Museum for Photography Berlin, Museum Folkwang Essen, Cinemateca Distrital Bogotá, Savvy Contemporary Berlin. Most recently Trakal was a participant at the Whitney Independent Study Program.

Orion Maxted

Orion Maxted is a theatre and performance maker based in Amsterdam. He studied Computing before turning to Music and Performance Art, and holds a Master of Theater from DAS (formally DasArts). His work explores a hybrid performative forms between complex systems, cybernetics, computation, language, musicality and theatre – joined in the idea of an ‘algorithmic theatre’ where ‘computers' and language systems are made of people.

As well as being a member of ArtScience Forum, Orion collaborates with the Systems Biology department of the University of Amsterdam; is an affiliate researcher at the Evolution, Complexity and Cognition (ECCO) research group at the Free University of Brussels; and a core member of BAU an organisation supporting independent performance makers in Amsterdam. Orion is supported by Frascati Productions, Amsterdam. His performance works have been shown internationally throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

Nick Koppenhagen (* 1987, Hamburg) is an artist from Berlin. He is interested in the visual properties of abstract systems and currently working on a (non-)playable card game based on a force-directed graph, a memory dune and the traces of interactions. He is one of the founding members of the Decentralized Autonomous Kunstverein.

His work has been exhibited at institutions like Kunsthaus Hamburg, Museum of Concrete Art Ingolstadt, Klosterruine Berlin and Schinkel Pavillon Berlin. He has given presentations at the Carpenter Center at Harvard University and La Gaîté Lyrique Paris.

Nina Runa Essendrop is a Danish artist and larp designer with a masters degree in Theater, Dance and Performance Studies. She has a strong focus on movement, sensory experiences and the meaning of physical action. Nina is an active player in the Nordic Larp community. She has designed and produced blackbox larps, freeform games, large scale-larps, audience inclusive larps and larp festivals and she has collaborated with artists in both Europe and New York.

Nina has designed and run workshops, larps, performances and interactive theatre pieces at among others Transmediale 2016 (Berlin, Germany), Momentum: The 8th Nordic Biennial of Contemporary Art (Moss, Norway), Athens Biennale 2018 (Athens, Greece), The Flea Theatre (New York, US), Dome of Visions (Århus, Denmark) and Ormston House (Limmerick, Ireland)

Carina Erdmann (* 1990, Cologne DE) is a multimedia artist and PhD researcher at LUCA School of Arts, based in Berlin and Brussels. With a background in theater and further education in audiovisual media, performance, critical theory and game design, her artistic practice is marked by a synthesis of different disciplines and perspectives. Her work explores collective worldbuilding, critical empathy and enabling structures. In her research she develops and assesses Remote Live Game Play, a hybridization of online gaming and performance.

Carina is a co-founder of 0ct0p0s, a research site for collective and interactive narration, and participant in the School of Commons. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows across Europe and the US and has been supported with Residencies, Grants and Scholarships.
